. Incognito offers comfort, a sleek design and complete customization to reduce treatment time.

When 3M Unitek- the makers of Incognito- created a self-ligating option, Eisenhuth and Bonvino, a Lakeville braces specialist

, discovered that these appliances can reduce treatment time even further without compromising optimum results.

Incognito braces were introduced several years ago under the brand name iBraces. The company recently rebranded the product, Bonvino said. Bonvino uses a variety of orthodontic appliances to treat patients, but Incognito braces are the only braces on the market today that are specifically customized to fit the contours of each individual patient’s teeth. They are lingual braces, which means they fit onto the back of the teeth. Therefore, they go unnoticed when the wearer speaks and smiles. Throw in the self-ligating feature, and Incognito braces easily are switched from active to passive mode as dictated by the orthodontist. Bonvino said she likes using the appliances because she can select the particular engagement level between each bracket and the archwire

. They can be active for finishing the teeth, or passive for leveling and aligning them.

This feature also is sometimes referred to as “self-ligation on demand, meaning it is there when needed, or not when the orthodontist doesn’t want to use it. “It is the best of both worlds,” said Bonvino, who also is a Lakeville Invisalign provider. Multiple studies have shown that self-ligating brackets

reduce frictional forces, lessen the length of time a patient is in orthodontic treatment, and offer quicker, easier archwire changes, Bonvino said.

How The Process Works The first step to getting Incognito brackets is meeting with an orthodontist to determine if you are a viable candidate for the appliances. “Nearly everyone can wear these braces, from children to adults,”she said. “Generally speaking, if you are a traditional braces candidate, you also will be a good candidate for Incognito braces.” To achieve the customized fit that is characteristic of Incognito braces, Bonvino takes an impression of the patients teeth. It is scanned into a computer and a skilled lab technician presents information back to Bonvino that she uses to help determine the patients treatment needs. The scanned impression also is used to create a 3-D model of the teeth. A lab technician creates the customized brackets and custom archwires that have been bent by a robot specifically for each patient, based on that 3-D model. All appliances then are sent back to the orthodontist, who bonds them directly onto your teeth. The fabrication process takes in the neighborhood of six weeks, while bonding the braces onto the teeth can be completed in less than an hour. Bonvino frequently uses Incognito braces on adult professionals who want the benefits of more comfortable, fast-acting treatment without everyone being able to tell that they are wearing braces, she said. She also uses them on teenagers who are involved in contact sports and who may be at risk of the occasional, inadvertent hit to the mouth. She also recommends that children involved in contact sports wear custom-fitted mouth guards while engaging in those activities to protect the patient’s orthodontic appliances and their teeth. Musicians who play wind instruments and people who simply are self-conscious about wearing braces that others can see are other good candidates for Incognito braces.About Cosmopolitan Orthodontics Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth opened Cosmopolitan Orthodontics on June 4, 2009 in Lakeville, MN.
